12. Edward Hampton
REES (1) was born in 1785 in Spartanburg, SC. He died on
23 Apr 1823 in Rees Creek, Perry Co., IL. Died of Typhoid beside
a boulder on Rees Creek while going to the deathbed of his father. The family
took sick 10 miles from home. Two little boys came to Judge Layman's home and
said that they could not rouse their parents or the two little sisters. He was
buried in Beside Rees Creek, Perry Co., IL. Linda Wetzel has his
name as Hampton Marion Reese.
From Fred Reese's grandmother:
"Edward Hampton Reese married Catherine Lindsay and lived in Christian County,
Ky in 1815. They came to Illinois, first settled in Jackson County, Illinois.
Later they moved to Perry County near Old DuQuoin, Illinois and made camp near
a creek now known as Reese Creek. Their children were James Lindsay, Edward
Hampton , Rueben Ross, Ephriam Timothy, John Douglas , Virginia and Nancy. The
story goes that the Reese family had decided to return to Kentucky and was only
about two days traveling by wagon train when two small boys rapped on a farmers
door and asked for help, that their parents were sick. This country at that
date was a wilderness. Traveling by wagons covered and horse drawn. When the
farmer and boys arrived at the camp, they found the parents, Edward Hampton and
wife Catherine Reese and their twin infant girls were dead. They were buried
near the Reese Creek where a large stone marked their graves. They died of milk
fever, now know as typhoid. Their five sons were sent to Kentucky to live with
their grandparents, Edward Hampton Reese. This was in 1823. Notice the name
James Lindsay Reese born 1814 in above story was Brail's grandfather married
Mary Elizabeth Biddle. They lived in a log house 1 mile west on Elkville, Illinois
, Jackson County. The log house is replaced now in 1989 with another house.
There are five Edward Hamptons in the Reese generations. The camp where the
deaths occurred is a section east of Old DuQuoin, Illinois called Blue Bell,
where the blue bell flowers grow abundantly yet. This day and time there is
a foot bridge crossing Reese Creek near where the Reese graves are located, northeast
of DuQuoin, Illinois." Edward Hampton REES (1) and Catherine LINDSAY were
married in 1807 in Montgomery Co., TN. May have been in Christian
